Sustaining Recovery with Long-term Support

Understanding Alcoholism

Alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol that interferes with other aspects of a person's life. Individuals struggling with alcohol abuse are often dependent on the drug and continue to drink despite negative personal, social, financial, professional, or legal consequences.

Symptoms of Alcohol Abuse and Addiction

Individuals with an alcohol addiction may have a hard time recognizing or admitting their problem. However, family or friends will often be aware of the common signs of alcoholism: physical or emotional dependence, increased tolerance, and changes in behavior as a result of drinking. Alcohol problems can range in severity, but any level of alcohol abuse can lead to a multitude of dangerous or negative outcomes.

Treatment for Alcohol Abuse and Addiction

To create a strong foundation for recovery, treatment for alcoholism must address the many underlying cause of alcohol addiction. Often, individuals with an addiction to alcohol also struggle with depression, anxiety, or other mental and emotional issues. These co-occurring disorders can be addressed with an integrated treatment approach that meets the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of the individual.

Sustaining Recovery with Long-term Support

Recovery from alcohol abuse is a life-long journey that often requires ongoing support and treatment. Depending on a person's unique needs, relapse prevention programs, workshops, support groups, and other recovery components can help sustain recovery beyond the initial treatment.
